The Gentle Art of Writing Fiction: Dreamers
The Gentle Art of Writing Fiction: Dreamers
I’ve just finished and published the final book in a fantasy/sci-fi series, Dreamers. The scarcity of blog postings on this site attests that this is one of the places where I haven’t devoted much of my work time during the last couple of years.
Where I have devoted the time (in addition to client work): to writing the three Dreamers novels–creating their world, moving it through its paces, and letting the characters adventure through that world in pursuit of their own fairly timeless dreams. The object of it all was to tell a tale that readers would enjoy, intended to let readers escape into a world that’s like theirs, but different, and come back refreshed.
Although many scenes in Dreamers required a lot of research, which I also enjoyed, I found the keenest enjoyment in writing the tale. That meant letting my characters run free through the pages and do what they would do about the events that surrounded them. Their mistakes, anguish, foolishness and joy are the story.
I have found the experience of writing and indie-publishing these three novels to be terrifically educational, too–sometimes so difficult it was painful, but always a learning experience. It was one that has made me more able to assist other writers who want to go the indie-publishing route with their books, fiction or non-.
And I admit it: writing this story has made me fall in love with fiction writing again as well.
